11th Massachusetts Regiment

The 11th Massachusetts Regiment was raised on September 16, 1776 under Colonel Ebenezer Francis at Boston, Massachusetts. The 11th Mass. would see action at the Battle of Hubbardton, Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Monmouth. The regiment was disbanded on January 1, 1781 at West Point, New York.
Colonel Ebenezer Francis was commanding officer of the 11th Massachusetts Regiment from November 6, 1776 until July 7, 1777, when he was killed at the Battle of Hubbardton. Colonel Benjamin Tupper was commanding officer from July 1, 1777 until January 1, 1781.

Valley Forge in Pennsylvania was the site of the military camp of the American Continental Army over the winter of 1777–1778 during the American Revolutionary War. It is approximately 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia.^[1] Starvation, disease, and exposure killed nearly 2,500 American soldiers by the end of February 1778.^[2]

.In 1833, Greenleaf was named to the Royall professorship, and in 1846 succeeded Judge Joseph Story as Dane professor of law at Harvard University. Greenleaf contributed extensively to the development of Harvard Law School, including expansion of the Harvard Law Library. He was retained as chief counsel by the Warren Bridge group in the US Supreme Court case Charles River Bridge v. Warren Bridge 36 U.S. 420 (1837) where the case laid down the rule that public contracts must be construed in favor of states.

In 1848, Greenleaf retired from his active duties, and became professor emeritus. After being for many years president of the Massachusetts Bible Society, he died at Cambridge. Greenleaf's well-known work, a Treatise on the Law of Evidence, is considered a classic of American jurisprudence. Greenleaf prepared the original constitution of the Colony of Liberia.

Moses Greenleaf (1777-1834) was Maine’s pioneer mapmaker. An outspoken advocate of Maine statehood and economic development, he prepared his first map in 1815 [map 7] to accompany his demonstration that Maine deserved independence: A Statistical View of the District of Maine (Boston: Cummings and Hilliard, 1816). This map was the first to depict the interior lakes and rivers of Maine with any degree of accuracy. Greenleaf’s 1820 reissue — the first map of the State of Maine — shows improvements in the delineation of several features, including Moosehead Lake.

SOURCE: A Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family by Jonathan Greenleaf published 1854 NOTE 81 Daniel Greenleaf (6) 1753-1831. the only child of David of Newburyport was born there in 1753. He was at sea for some little time during the war of the Revolution and was once a prisoner.  When he was over 30 he married Polly Bridges and had 6 children. About the year 1800, Mr. Greenleaf removed from Newburyport to the town of Rumford in Maine where he died in 1839 at the age of 86.

SOURCE: A Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family by Jonathan Greenleaf published 1854 NOTE 81 David Greenleaf, the eldest son of Daniel of Newbury and the grandson of John Sr. was born in Newbury July 25 1621.  He resided for some years in Boston; was a man of considerable property and at one time held the office of Town Treasurer.  He afterwards became poor and removed to Newportbury where he died in June 1785 at the age of 64. He married Sarah Lamson and had one child only viz” Daniel.

He followed the sea and was drowned on Newbury Bar in Jan or Feb 1729. He married Mary Sarah Moody, and had buried 3 young children before his death leaving 4 when he died: 2 sons, David (5) & Jonathan (5) and 2 daughters —(ancestry.com trees and the other information available lists 3 daughters) —Elizabeth (5) who  married Moses Pearson of Byefield and Sarah (5) who married Isaac Johnson (ancestry.com trees and the documents available have diffferent spouses).. His wife had a daughter born a few months after his death who died in infancy.

SOURCE: A Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family by Jonathan Greenleaf published 1854 NOTE 9 - John Greenleaf  (3) 1662-1734 the second son of Stephen Greenleaf, Sen., and Elizabeth Coffin his wife, who lived to marry, and was born at Newbury, June 21, 1662, and resided in Newbury until his death. He was twice married, first to Elizabeth Hills, and second to Mrs. Lydia Pierce, the widow of Benjamin Pierce, Esq., and sister of Major Charles Frost, of Kittery, Me. By his first marriage he had ten children, six sons and four daughters. He was admitted to the First Congregational Church in Newbury, with his first wife, on Jan. 31, 1696. Mr. Greenleaf died May 24, 1734, at the age of 72. His second wife survived him, dying May 13th, 1752, aged 78. He was buried near the north corner of the " Old town" meeting-house. The present house of worship occupying that site, probably covers the grave.

SOURCE: A Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family by Jonathan Greenleaf published 1854 NOTE 3 Stephen (2) Greenleaf 1628-1690 was the only son of Edmund, the common ancestor, of who we have an account.  He was born inEngland in 1630 and at the age of 5 years came to America with his father. He resided in Newbury until his death.  In 1651 he married Elizabeth Coffin, the daughter of Tristram Coffin Sr by whom he has 10 children. His wife died Nov 19 1678 and in March he married Mrs Esther Swett. He was a captain of militia ans as such went to Cape Breton in the Indian wars and was there wrecked in a vessel and drowned in company with 9 others on Dec 1 1690 at the age of 60 years His 2nd wife outlived him dying in Newbury Jan 16 1718 aged 89. Mr. Greenleaf was a religious man,  a member of the First Congregational Church in Newbury to which he was admitted Dec 6 1674.

SOURCE: A Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family by Jonathan Greenleaf published 1854 NOTE 1  Edmund Greenleaf, who is named in the Chart as the common ancestor, was born in the parish of Brixham, and county of Devonshire, near Torbay, in England, about the year 1600. He married Sarah Dole and had several children born in England.  In the year 1635 he came to America with his family and settled in Newbury, Mass.  He lived near “Old Town Bridge” where for some  he kept a tavern.  He was by trade a silk-dyer. About the year 1650, he removed to Boston where he buried his wife, and afterwards married a Widow Hill, who had several children by a former husband. This marriage was rather an unhappy one.  In the early part of 1671,
