LOVEJOY

LOVEJOY to Blanchard to Leadbeater

The Lovejoy name and its travels
The Lovejoy family readily traces its ancestry to England where mainly in Buckinghamshire and also in such other southern counties as Essex, Berkshire and Kent, there are clear records of the ancestors of the American branches back to 1460. Indeed, there has been practically no variation of the spelling of the name in nearly 500 years. Perhaps the early English parish clerks and church sextons who wrote it Lovejoy and Lovejoye could not distinguish in their alphabets between the “I” and the “j”. Similarly, those few early instances where the name is found spelling Louejouy, Lovjoy, Loujoy, Lovejoue, Lovejoi, Lovejoy, and Louyoye should ascribe to carelessness.
In America the spelling has always been Lovejoy…[The LOVEJOY GENEALOGY with biographies and history 1460-1930 by Clarence Earl Lovejoy]

Confusion about marriage or marriages. He married Joanna Temple 1569 but on marriage register “William Lovejoy married Johane Tampale in 1574. The confusion is that William had at least 3 children born before that date. Did he have a previous wife, Joanna Temple or was he in reality married in 1569 then delayed the registration.

NOTES
·         Andover was one of the first “inland” settlements after the coast land along Cape Cod and Massachusetts bays. It was originally called Cochichewick and continued to be known as that until the town of Andover was incorporated and confirmed in 1646.
·         The exact date of the settlement of Andover is uncertain therefore it is hard to determine the exact date that John Lovejoy arrived in America – it is believed to be shortly after 1634 but may have been 1638 or later.
·         John Lovejoy was one of the first settlers and householders, being the 17th on the town’s earliest list.
