Stephen or John Greenleaf (1510 - ) 12th great grandfather
John Greenleaf (1542 - 1592) son of Stephen or John Greenleaf 11th great grandfather
EARLY GREENLEAF FAMILY  From all that can be gathered, it is believed that the ancestors of the Greenleaf family were Huguenots, who left France on account of their religious principles, sometime in the course of the sixteenth century, and settled in England.  The name was, probably, translated from the French Fuillevert.  Copied from [A GENEALOGY OF THE GREENLEAF FAMILY – JONATHAN GREENLEAF. April 1854]

Huguenots Cross

The list below is the direct line and they have been researched and should be accurate. The included aunts, uncles and cousins should be fairly accurate but I haven’t checked everything out yet.

NOTES
Came to New England before 1638 and settled at Newbury, Mass.; was freeman 13 Mar 1639 and the same year appointed Ensign of the Company at Newbury and permitted to keep a house of entertainment [tavern]. In 1642 he was Lieutenant and was appointed "to end small business in Newberry;" in 1647 he was, at his own request, discharged from his military office, and later moved to Boston where his wife Sarah died 18 Jan 1663; he married secondly another Sarah. She died at Boston in 1671.

EDMUND GREENLEAF
Edmund Greenleaf, who is named … as the common ancestor, was born in the parish of Brixham, and county of Devonshire, near Torbay, in England, about the year 1600.  He married Sarah Dole, and had several children born in England.  In the year 1635, he came to America with his family, and settled in Newbury, Mass.  He lived near “Old Town Bridge” where for some years he kept a tavern.  He was by trade a silk-dyer. About the year 1650 he removed to Boston where he buried his wife and afterwards married a Widow Hill, who had several children by a former husband.  This marriage was rather an unhappy one. In the early part of 1671, Mr Greenleaf died.
His will, a very curious document, written, as is supposed, by himself, was proved Feb 12, 1671, and is recorded in the Probate Records in Boston, in the volume for 1669 to 1674, page 112.
